In the second quarter of 2025, more than half of the electricity in the European Union (54%) came from renewable sources, marking further growth compared to 52.7% a year earlier. The main driver was solar power: 122.3 TWh, accounting for 19.9% of the entire mix in the quarter. What’s more, June 2025 made history — for the first time, photovoltaics became the single largest source of energy in the EU (22.0%), surpassing nuclear (21.6%), wind (15.8%), hydro (14.1%), and gas (13.8%).
The leaders in the share of renewables in electricity generation were: Denmark (94.7%), Latvia (93.4%), Austria (91.8%), Croatia (89.5%), and Portugal (85.6%); the lowest shares were recorded in Slovakia (19.9%), Malta (21.2%), and the Czech Republic (22.1%). In 15 countries, the share of renewables increased, particularly in Luxembourg (+13.5 p.p.) and Belgium (+9.1 p.p.), driven by solar power. Among renewables themselves, the dominant sources were solar (36.8%), wind (29.5%), and hydro (26.0%).
